Summer Start Prep List

This Prep List serves as your roadmap for all the things that you need or may want to do before beginning on June 19, 2024!

As a Summer Start participant, you may be wondering about what you need to do to prepare for the summer and where to find the resources and information related to Summer Start.

Note: This Prep List does not replace the New Student Checklist but is meant to help you prepare for the Summer Start program specifically. Click here to access the New Student Checklist.  Click through the items below to begin preparing for your Summer Start experience!

Now that you are part of Summer Start, you need to get to know us better. Follow these important groups to connect, access information, and stay up-to-date on deadlines.

You should also make sure to check your personal and NC State email regularly for important information about your Summer Start experience, including course registration, important deadlines, and what to expect this summer! While you are at it, be sure to set up your NC State email account! To learn how to set up your NC State email, visit the Office for Information Technology’s website.

Whether you are a first-year or transfer student, there are steps you need to take to complete your advising and course registration for summer. Please look through the information below that pertains to you.

First-Year Students

Students participating in Summer Start will register for classes from home during the late-April to early-May period on MyPack Portal. Course registration takes place after you have completed academic advising either through advising meetings and/or online modules. Review the information on our Advising and Course Registration page to understand how to prepare for registering for your first semester of courses. This process only pertains to your course registration for Summer Session II (Summer Start). You will register for your fall semester courses at a later date in conjunction with your academic program.

Transfer Students

You may complete course registration after speaking with your academic advisor by accessing the MyPack Portal system. Click here for a listing of academic advisors for transfer students. Advising for Summer Start can occur at the same time as your conversation with your academic advisor about fall classes. More information can be found on the fall Transfer advising page.

Any needed placement tests (indicated here in your college-specific information) should be completed as soon as possible in order to assist in the advising and course registration process. 

As part of the first-year live on requirement, First-year students are required to live on-campus for the summer, unless they complete an appeal with University Housing and you can learn more about where you will be living and housing cost by visiting the Summer Start housing website.

If you have completed your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you have been considered for potential financial aid awards. To learn about any financial aid you have been awarded, visit the Receiving your Financial Aid page on the Student Services Center website. Have specific questions about your award? Summer Session II tuition and fees will be available beginning end of May via MyPack Portal and are due by early June. Please note: there is no payment plan available during the summer so all bills must be paid by early June. Use the links below to access resources available through the NC State Student Services Center for more information about your bill:

In order to have financial aid or other refunds deposited directly into a US checking account, students are required to complete direct deposit information. Failure to have current direct deposit information will delay refunds. Funds can be deposited into a checking account (not a savings account) at any US bank. Find the steps for completing your direct deposit information here.

As part of NC State’s commitment to fostering a healthy and inclusive environment, all new first-year and transfer students are required to complete online trainings before the stated deadline below, before their first semester. Online education courses cover topics including:

  • Alcohol education (required for students under age 21 as of August 16, 2023)
  • Hazing prevention
  • Sexual assault prevention (Title IX)
  • Prescription Drug Abuse prevention

All enrolled students are required to complete New Student Orientation. In addition, we strongly recommend that family members complete the concurrent Family Orientation program. New students must complete the required Summer Start session prior to the start of summer classes (Monday, June 24). First-year students will be registered by New Student Programs staff and transfer students. Once you are registered, you will receive a confirmation email and you can register any family members) for the session, which will be held on:

  • First-Year Students (starting fall 2024 or spring 2025): Thursday, June 20 – Friday, June 21
  • Transfer Students: Friday, June 21

Spring Connect

All actively enrolled Summer Start participants are eligible to enroll in a meal plan regardless of whether they live in University Housing or off-campus. Options range from 20 meals throughout the summer to 30 meals, and both options include Dining Points, which can be added throughout the summer as well. As you review the options, there should be a meal plan for you. And don’t forget to check out the campus dining locations!

Meal plans will begin on Saturday, June 22.

If you are interested in a parking permit that allows you to park on-campus during the summer, please visit the NC State Transportation website for more information.

For a cost-effective solution, we recommend waiting until June 15 or after to purchase your parking permit and selecting the ‘Summer 2’ option. The cost for this permit will be $50 and will allow you to park on campus from your Move-In (June 19) to August 11.

If you plan to park your vehicle on campus for the fall semester, visit the Student Parking page for permit options and sales dates.

Contact the Disability Resources Office (DRO) should you require academic accommodations during the summer or academic year due to physical, mental health and/or learning disabilities. Students are encouraged to initiate contact with the DRO as early in their academic career as possible.

Review our Summer Start Move-In Map to get familiar with important locations and directions you will need as you move into Tucker Residence Hall on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Save the Date: Summer Start Welcome Program will occur on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 from 4:00pm to 9:00pm!

  • Group photo at 4:15 p.m. on Owen/Tucker beach (plan to be out there at 4:00 p.m.)
  • Small group time with your Mentor from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. 
  • Dinner from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Fountain Dining Hall 
  • Summer Start Welcome Program at 7:15 p.m. in The Washington Sankofa Room

During this time you will attend a small group meeting with your Mentor, dinner and a formal Welcome Program. More information about the Welcome Program will be emailed to participants in early-mid June.

If you are not staying on-campus, you will need check-in from 3:30 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. outside Tucker Hall on Owen/Tucker Beach.
