Fall International Family Orientation

This page will be updated in Spring 2020 with information for families of students entering in Fall 2020. International Orientation will be held Wednesday, August 12 – Friday, August 14, 2020.

Welcome to International Family Orientation!

The Office of New Student Programs and the Office of International Services welcomes you to NC State University, a community of achievers rich in tradition and academic excellence. To assist you and your family as new members of this community, we invite you to attend a Family Orientation session. These sessions are designed specifically for parents and families of international students. While students are attending Student Orientation, family members can attend Family Orientation. The first-year family program will be held Thursday August 15 through Friday, August 16, 2019, and the transfer family program will be held Friday, August 16, 2019. Additionally, a campus tour will be offered to international family members on Wednesday, August 14 from 9:00a.m.-10:00a.m. During Family Orientation, you will be able to:

  • Get better acquainted with the academic programs and campus services offered to your student
  • Gain insights into the potential adjustments your new college student and your family will face
  • Meet NC State staff, current students, and other parents and family members.

Dates

Orientation for Families of International First-Year Students:

  • Thursday, August 15 from 3:00p.m. to 6:30p.m., and Friday, August 16 from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.

Orientation for Families of International Transfer Students:

  • Friday, August 16 from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.

Please note, your student’s orientation session timing will differ from Family Orientation. Additionally, a campus tour will be offered for international family members on Wednesday, August 14 from 9:00a.m. to 10:00a.m. beginning outside Talley Student Union. Who Should Attend?

Family Orientation is designed for those who will serve as a student’s primary support throughout their transition to the university. During the program, attendees will:

  • Get better acquainted with the academic programs and campus services offered to your student
  • Gain insights into the potential adjustments your new college student and your family will face
  • Meet NC State staff, current students, and other Family Orientation attendees.

Can children or young adults attend the program? Children and young adults are welcome to attend Family Orientation, but the majority of the sessions are presented in a lecture format and may not be engaging for them. Will students and guests be together during the program? Guests should not expect to be with their student throughout the entire program. Some sessions of New Student and Family Orientation will overlap, but the majority of presentations and activities are separate.

Cost

The cost of attendance for Family Orientation is included in the mandatory fees charged to all new first-year and transfer international students.

  • These fees cover your student’s attendance and the attendance of guests, which includes your materials and lunch tickets (up to two per family) for Fountain Dining Hall.
  • This does not include overnight housing for family members, but a list of local hotels can be found here.
  • No payment is due to New Student Programs or the Office for International Services. The mandatory student fees will be included in your student’s Fall tuition bill.

Registration

Family Orientation is an optional program offered to the parents and families of incoming students. Registration for Family Orientation is tied into the student’s registration for orientation and should be done at the same time by the student. Only those students who have been accepted and have paid their advanced enrollment deposit ($300.00) can register for Orientation. All students who have paid their deposit will receive an email from our office inviting them to register for Orientation. To register for Orientation: Registration for Family Orientation is tied into the student’s registration for New Student Orientation and should be done at the same time by the student.

  1. The student should log into their WolfPAW account via the Undergraduate Admissions website
  2. Click on the “Register for Orientation” link under the “My To-Do List” section on the Dashboard.
  3. Read the instructions and select International Orientation Session #27 to attend (this will be the only option listed).
  4. Scroll down to enter the family member information. Be sure to include a correct email address for your family members as this is the method of our correspondence with them.
  5. Click “Submit”
  6. A confirmation email will be sent to the student and family member’s email addresses. Please keep a copy of this email for your records.

To also register for the campus tour for international families on Wednesday, August 15 from 9:00a.m.-10:00a.m., complete the online registration form.

Housing

You have several options to consider when making overnight accommodations for Family Orientation.  Housing is NOT included in your student’s fees. Click here for a list of local hotels offering discounts to Orientation attendees. Note:  NC State does not endorse any particular entities that are not part of NC State.  The University has no responsibility with respect to any entities, or the housing or services they offer. Directions and Parking Permit

PARKING FOR UNIVERSITY HOUSING MOVE-IN

Students moving in between Tuesday, August 13 and Wednesday, August 14 should print the Early Arrival Placard. You must display this placard in your vehicle on your move-in day.

Reserved spaces are for unloading only. Once you have completed your unloading, move your vehicle(s) to the areas designated for early check-in long-term parking.

PARKING FOR ORIENTATION (WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14 – FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2019)

Orientation participants may park on campus in the Coliseum Parking Deck entering via Jensen Drive. The parking lot address is 201 Jensen Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606.

HOW TO GET TO NC STATE:

  • Directions to the Coliseum Parking Deck (201 Jensen Drive, Raleigh, NC 27607) can be found using this Waze Link or on the NC State Campus Map interactive website.
  • Visit the University Transportation website for road construction updates/closings.
  • Please do not try to enter campus via Dan Allen Drive from Hillsborough Street. The road is gated and not accessible to campus from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

ORIENTATION PARKING:

Students and families attending Orientation will use a free virtual parking permit that is validated using license plate recognition. The permit will be valid for the Coliseum Parking Deck from 7:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. for all three days of your session. Parking is free and open to the public after 5:00p.m.

Register for your permit before leaving for Orientation using the following instructions, and note that you will need your license plate information to complete the online form. Speak with your student before obtaining your permit to ensure you are only completing this online registration process once for each vehicle that will need parking during Orientation.

How to Obtain Your Orientation Event Permit:

  1. Visit aimsparking.com
  2. Select “Purchase Event Permit” (Note: Permit is Free)
  3. Agree to the Terms of Service
  4. Select “Orientation” as the event category
  5. Select “8/14 – 8/16 August Orientation” as your event
  6. When prompted enter Augustorientation2019 as the Event Voucher Code. The code is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as shown. Click Confirm.
  7. Select Permit Type
  8. Select the session start date (8/14/2019)
  9. Select the session end date (8/16/2019). Click Confirm.
  10. Select Location
  11. Click “Add Vehicle”. Enter vehicle license plate, state, year and make. Click Add.
  12. Enter Client Name and Phone Number. Click Confirm.
  13. Review information entered for accuracy and click continue.
  14. Enter email address to receive, confirmation of parking permit. Click Checkout. Remember, the permit is virtual, so your license plate is your permit and no paper permit is required. Permit is only valid only for the vehicle entered.

Important Virtual Permit Notes:

  • This permit is free for guests, and you should not need to enter credit card information. If you use a credit card to purchase another permit in error, refunds are not available.
  • Accessible parking is available. It is only valid when a state-issued placard is displayed in your vehicle and you have registered for an accessible virtual Orientation permit through NC State (instructions above).
  • If you need to change which vehicle you are bringing after registering, call the NC State Transportation office at 919.515.3424 to edit your permit.
  • If you will be using a rental car, wait to register for a virtual permit once you have the vehicle and its license plate information.
