Congratulations on being invited to be a part of NC State’s 2023 Spring Connect cohort! As a Spring Connect student, you have the opportunity to participate in some of NC State’s programs before enrolling as a full-time student in January 2024. This includes Summer Start, a six-week program that allows students to live on-campus, complete up to eight (8) credit hours and supports you as you transition to the academic, social, and co-curricular environment of NC State.
As a part of Summer Start, you have access to a Summer Start Mentor (your own personal guide in ensuring a smooth transition) to assist new students as they find their way as part of the NC State community. This experience provides you with a supportive environment that encourages a sense of community to promote studying, engagement, and well-being.
Summer Start is a unique opportunity for you to jump start your NC State undergraduate experience by:
- LIVING in the heart of campus
- CONNECTING with new students and student mentors
- EARNING up to eight credit hours in summer session II classes
- ENGAGING with faculty in smaller classes
- EXPLORING academic and personal interests in a supportive environment
Summer Start takes place from June 21 – August 2, 2023!
Use the drop-down menus below to learn more about Summer Start.
A unique aspect of Summer Start is the opportunity to get to know the campus and local community through various co-curricular programs. These programs offer students a small and supportive community to make crucial relationships with faculty, staff, and fellow new students while gaining a head start building your support network with people who have a particular interest in helping you succeed.
Through partnerships with campus offices, you will have various workshops, programs, and events at your fingertips to learn more about your academic and personal interests. With programs happening multiple times a week throughout the five-week program, there is always something to do!
As part of the first-year live on requirement, First-year students are required to live on-campus for the summer, unless they complete an appeal with University Housing and you can learn more by visiting the Summer Start housing website.
Please note: new first-year students should expect to live on-campus during the Spring 2023 semester as required by the First-Year Live On Requirement.
As a Spring Connect student, you will be officially enrolling full-time at the university in January 2043, so when you take classes on campus during Summer Start, you will be classified as a Non-Degree Studies (NDS) student during the Summer II 2023 semester. Due to the NDS status, participants are not eligible for State or Federal financial aid or NC State scholarships. Note: Spring Connect students may be eligible for financial aid during the academic year (fall and spring). To learn more, visit the New Student Checklist.
To learn more about the expenses and projected program costs, visit the Summer Start website. Also, you can find more information about the policies for NDS students here.
Summer Start is a great way to adapt to the rigors of college academics, gain experience in college-level courses and start on the path towards graduation, all before you begin on campus in January. You can view the advising and registration process, as well as sample schedules showing courses students in each college frequently take during Summer Start, here. As a Spring Connect student, you will be following the Summer Start advising and registration process for first-year students to enroll in summer classes.
Due to Spring Connect students taking summer classes and starting as degree seeking students in spring 2024, Spring Connect will attend two Orientation sessions to help them navigate campus, learn about available resources, meet other incoming students (including other Spring Connect students), and prepare for summer and spring classes. Spring Connect students participating in Summer Start will attend the Summer Start Orientation session on Thursday, June 22 – Friday, June 23 and will also attend the mandatory Spring Orientation (held in January 2023) program for new first-year students to fulfill their New Student Orientation requirement.
For more information on the Summer Start Orientation session, visit the First-Year Orientation webpage. You will receive a confirmation email once you are registered by New Student Programs staff, at which point, you can register any family members who wish to attend. Students will be charged the First-Year Student Fee in spring 2024 and will not be billed twice by NC State for this fee.
