Terms to Know

At NC State, academic advising is an intentional process designed to support students as they develop and pursue educational, career, and personal goals. As part of this process, academic advisors will provide advising around course selection before each academic term enrollment period.

The academic advisor who assist you with your first semester registration may or may not be your ongoing assigned advisor. Regardless, the advising team in your college or program will provide you with advising while you are in transition as a new student.

Holds on your account may prevent you from enrolling in the upcoming term. An advising hold is placed on your account until you have completed academic advising. To view your holds, navigate to MyPack Portal > Student Homepage > Tasks & Holds tile.

Use the Class Search Tool to view upcoming class schedules. Search by class subject, number, or days and times each section meets in order to find what best meets your needs. The Spring 2024 schedule will be available on October 11, 2023.

The course catalog lists every course offered during your time at NC State. Use this tool to view course descriptions and credit information.

  • Asynchronous – Classes that do not meet on set days at a set time; instead, students may be required to watch pre-recorded lectures or otherwise complete coursework on their own time. If a class meets asynchronously, it will simply be designated as online with no meeting time on your class schedule.
  • Face-to-Face – Courses that take place in-person in classrooms on campus
  • Hybrid – Classes that have both in-person and online components. Students may be split and meet in-person on alternating days; on the days in which students are not meeting in-person, they may be required to watch live lectures, pre-recorded lectures, or otherwise complete coursework online. Individual class details will be communicated to students by the instructor.
  • Synchronous – Distance-education (online) courses that meet on a set day(s) at a set time; will have a meeting day and time designated on your class schedule.

You will be assigned a specific date and time that you can enroll in classes using the online Enrollment Wizard in MyPack Portal. To find your enrollment date and time, navigate to MyPack Portal > Student Homepage > Planning & Enrollment tile. Learn more on the Enrollment Calendar webpage

The Enrollment Wizard is a tool in MyPack Portal that allows you to plan your classes and build your schedule each semester. Learn how to use the Wizard on the Student Services Center website.
