Summer Start for Spring Connection Students

Congratulations on being invited to be a part of NC State’s 2019 Spring Connection cohort!  As a Spring Connection student, you have the opportunity to participate in some of NC State’s programs before enrolling as a full-time student in January 2019.  This includes Summer Start, a six-week residential program on campus allows students to complete up to eight (8) credit hours and supports you as you transition to the academic, social, and co-curricular environment of NC State.

As a part of Summer Start, you have access to a Summer Start Mentor (your own personal guide in ensuring a smooth transition) to assist new students as they find their way on NC State’s campus. The residential experience provides you with a supportive environment that encourages a sense of community to promote studying, engagement, and well-being.

Summer Start is a unique opportunity for you to jump start your NC State undergraduate experience by:

  • LIVING in the heart of campus
  • CONNECTING with new students and student mentors
  • EARNING up to eight credit hours in summer session II classes
  • ENGAGING with faculty in smaller classes
  • EXPLORING academic and personal interests in a supportive environment
  • NAVIGATING campus in a relaxed setting

Summer Start takes place from June 20-August 1, 2018, and applications are available now.

Use the drop-down menus below to learn more about Summer Start.

Living on campus is an essential part of students’ transitions to college, and NC State requires all first-year students to live in University Housing.  As such, all first-year students participating in Summer Start are required to live on-campus during the summer as well. Exemptions from the live on requirement may be available.  Learn more about NC State’s first year requirement and possible exemptions here.

On-campus housing for Summer Start will be in the heart of campus in Tucker Hall.  Mark your calendar for Summer Start housing Move-In on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 from 9:00am to 2:00pm! More information about Move-In will come in late-May.

Financial Aid

As a Spring Connection student, you will be officially enrolling full-time at the university in January 2019, so when you take classes on campus during Summer Start, you will be classified as aNon-Degree Studies (NDS) student during the Summer II 2018 semester. Due to the NDS status, participants are not eligible for State or Federal financial aid or NC State scholarships. Note: Spring Connection students may be eligible for financial aid during the academic year (fall and spring). To learn more, visit the New Student Checklist.

To learn more about the expenses and projected program costs, visit the Summer Start website.  Also, you can find more information about the policies for NDS students here.

academic Advising & Course Registration

Summer Start is a great way to adapt to the rigors of college academics, gain experience in college-level courses and start on the path towards graduation, all before you begin on campus in January.  You can view the advising and registration process, as well as sample schedules showing courses students in each college frequently take during Summer Start, here.  As a Spring Connection student, you will be following the Summer Start advising and registration process for first-year students to enroll in summer classes.

New Student Orientation

Spring Connection students participating in Summer Start will attend a condensed welcome program on June 21-22, 2018 to help them navigate campus, learn about available resources, meet other Spring Connection students, and prepare for summer classes.  Additional information will be provided upon application to the Summer Start program.

To fulfill your New Student Orientation requirement, Spring Connection students will attend Spring Orientation.  Spring Orientation is a mandatory program for new first-year students that will take place on Thursday, January 3, 2019. Parents and family members are also invited to attend a concurrent program.  Additional information about Spring Orientation will be available here beginning in fall 2018.
