Summer Start Mentor Recruitment

Each year, we recruit student leaders to serve as Mentors to students in Summer Start. Mentors serve as importance resources and guides to assist new students with the transition to NC State University. Many of these students have past experience with the program and represent a diverse cultural and academic background. Serving as a Mentor is meaningful opportunity for current NC State students to develop leadership skills and professionalism while giving back to their local community of peers.

What is a Peer Mentor?

A Mentor with the Summer START program is a caring and responsible adult who serves as a guide to incoming NC State students.  Mentors work collaboratively with Summer START staff to help students develop important academic and social skills, participate in new opportunities, and learn about a wide array of campus resources.

What are the Peer Mentor position requirements?

Summer Start looks for responsible and caring NC State students who have a passion for helping others. We look for students who serve as positive role models to incoming students. A Mentor is someone who actively listens to their mentee and assist them with questions or concerns in a empathetic and caring manner. In addition to these qualities, we seek out students who show initiative, maturity, and commitment. Other qualifications include:

  • Be a current NC State student enrolled in 6 or less credit hours during summer session II (to occur between 8am and 4pm)
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5
  • Live on-campus with Summer Start students for summer session II
  • Must be available June 19 – August 22017
  • Exceptional oral communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of team members and students
  • Exhibit a positive attitude and enthusiasm for Summer Start
  • Involvement in campus activities is preferred
  • Exhibit flexibility and interest in helping others
  • Successfully complete USC 298 with a grade of C or better (or “S”) during spring 2017. This course will be offered on Mondays at 4:30 PM. *Students who have already successfully completed this course will not be required to enroll but will be expected to participate in specified class meetings

What are the Peer Mentor’s responsibilities?

  • Meet with students weekly to advise, listen, and assist with student concerns
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of student meetings
  • Attend required trainings, workshops, and staff meetings communicated by program staff
  • Assist with move-in and move-out of new students
  • Plan and facilitate one (1) social or professional program under the direction of program staff
  • Attend weekly cookouts and at least two (2) campus resource programs
  • Establish and maintain open communication with students
  • Notify students of program related activities
  • Serve as an academic role model to students and model appropriate behavior at all times
  • Maintain availability and flexibility to address student needs throughout the day and evening, including weekends
  • Follow Summer Start and University Rules and Regulations
  • Remain in good conduct and academic standing with the University throughout employment

What is a Lead Mentor?

A Lead Mentor with the Summer START program demonstrates an increased level of leadership among their peers and mentees. Lead Mentors work collaboratively with Summer START staff to help students develop important academic and social skills, participate in new opportunities, and learn about a wide array of campus resources. Additionally, Lead Mentors will serve as a resource to Mentors and provide ethical and appropriate guidance as needed.

What are the Lead Mentor position requirements?

  • Be a current NC State student enrolled in 4 or less credit hours during summer session II (to occur between 8am and 4pm)
  • Live on campus with Summer START students for summer session II
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.8
  • Must be available June 19th – August 2nd 2016
  • Experience as a mentor in a related capacity
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with conflict resolution and interpersonal problem solving
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of team members and students
  • Familiarity with social media platforms
  • Possess previous leadership experience (on or off campus)
  • One letter of recommendation from an NC State faculty, administrator, or staff member
  • Successfully complete USC 298 with a grade of C or better (or “S”) during spring 2017. This course will be offered on Mondays at 4:30 PM. *Lead Mentors who have already completed the course will not be required to enroll but will be required to attend all class meetings.

What are the Lead Mentor’s responsibilities?

  • Meet with students weekly to advise, listen, and assist with student concerns
  • Meet with mentors to address questions or concerns
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of student meetings
  • Attend required trainings, workshops, and staff meetings communicated by program staff
  • Assist with move-in and move-out of new students
  • Maintain availability and flexibility to address student and mentor needs throughout the day and evening, including weekends
  • Attend weekly cookouts and at least two (2) campus resource programs
  • Notify students and mentors of program related activities and events
  • Lead and guide mentor staff with training, staff concerns, and planning of events
  • Assist Coordinator and Graduate Assistant with program marketing
  • Be a positive and responsible role model for students and mentor staff
  • Have a minimum of 5 office hours per week where you are available for questions/concerns

What is the compensation for Mentor positions?

Mentors are compensated with a $650 stipend and housing costs for summer session II.

Lead Mentors are compensated with a $900 stipend and housing costs for summer session II.

How do I apply?

If you are interested in applying to be a Summer Start Mentor, please fill out the application linked below. All applications are due by October 21st at 5:00 PM. Upon review, an applicant may be chosen for an interview with professional staff members to occur in November. Applicants can be expected to hear final hiring decisions in early December.
