Welcome to NC State, and congratulations on your decision to join the Wolfpack! New Student Programs looks forward to working with students in the Summer Start Program throughout their transition to the University. To accommodate your Summer Session II class schedule, we offer an Orientation session specifically for first-year student and families participating in Summer Start. Transfer students and families should attend first Transfer Orientation session. Review the information below regarding New Student and Family Orientation that corresponds to your entry type (first-year or transfer), and contact us if you have any questions.


First-Year Student Orientation

Students in the Summer Start program should attend New Student Orientation on Thursday, June 22 – Friday, June 23, 2017. Attendance is required, and you will not need to attend your College’s session later in the summer.

Date

Thursday, June 22 – Friday, June 23, 2017

Check-In will take place from 8:00am to 8:45am at Lee Residence Hall.

Cost

The cost of attendance is included in the mandatory First-Year Student Fee charged to all new first-year students.

  • This fee covers your attendance and the attendance of up to two guests for Family Orientation, including guests’ materials and lunch tickets (up to two per family) for Fountain Dining Hall.
  • This does not include overnight housing for family members. Information on overnight accommodations for family members can be found here.
  • No payment is due to New Student Programs. The First-Year Student Fee will be included in your Fall tuition bill.

Registration

Once you submit your enrollment deposit to attend NC State, you will receive an email inviting you to register for New Student Orientation. However, if you are a confirmed participant in the Summer Start Program, you do not need to take any action to register for Orientation. New Student Programs will register you for the Summer Start Orientation session within a week after your enrollment at NC State and attendance in the program are confirmed. You will receive a confirmation email once we have registered you for the session.

Family Orientation: If you wish to register parents and family members for Family Orientation, please scroll down to the Family Orientation section and click “Registration” for detailed instructions.

Cancellation: If your plans have changed and you no longer plan to participate in Summer START, please immediately notify New Student Programs at 919.515.1234 or summerstart@ncsu.edu to cancel your participation and reschedule your orientation session.

Check-In and Schedule

During New Student Orientation,  you will learn about NC State while registering for classes, staying overnight in a residence hall, meeting with college representatives, receiving information about campus resources, and meeting other students.

  • Orientation Check-in is from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. at Lee Residence Hall, and the majority of the program will take place in Talley Student Union and Witherspoon Student Center.  Day 1 of the Orientation program will run from 8:00 a.m. – 10:10 p.m., and Day 2 of the Orientation program will last from 7:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Once you arrive on campus using the directions provided below, Orientation signs will direct you to the parking lots where you able to park throughout the program.
  • Meals for students during Orientation (lunch and dinner on the first day and breakfast on the second day) are included in the New Student Orientation fee and will be served at Fountain Dining Hall, located near Lee Residence Hall.

No Alcoholic Beverages Allowed. Orientation participants, as students of North Carolina State University, are subject to the Code of Student Conduct. It mandates that consumption or possession of alcoholic beverages by all persons under the age of 21 is strictly forbidden.  This is also the law in the State of North Carolina.  Students who disregard this mandate will be held accountable for their behavior and disciplinary actions from the University will result.

Meet the students behind #OL2017! 

Each year New Student Programs selects a group of mature and dedicated undergraduate leaders to assist with implementing university orientation programs throughout the year. Orientation Leaders serve as resources and peer advisors to new students and family members attending orientation programs.

Housing

If you are living on campus (which is every student who is not exempt from the university’s first year live-on requirement), you will stay in your Owen Hall room during Orientation.

If you are living off campus during Summer Start due to being exempt from University Housing’s first year live-on requirement, you will have the option to stay in Lee Residence Hall on the evening of Thursday, June 22 (included in the New Student Fee). Email New Student Programs at orientation@ncsu.edu to request housing for the evening of Thursday, June 22.

Students who identify as transgender and who plan to spend the night on campus during Orientation may contact Cameron Hill prior to their arrival to discuss the options available for room assignments. The Orientation staff works with transgender students on a case-by-case basis to find the right housing fit for each student.

Directions and Parking Permit

ORIENTATION PARKING:

  • Orientation participants may park on campus in the Lee Lot/West Lot areas located off of Sullivan Drive. The parking lot address is 2530 Sullivan Drive, Raleigh, NC 27607.
  • Please print the Orientation Parking Permit and place the permit on the passenger side dashboard of your vehicle. It must be displayed at all times.

HOW TO GET TO NC STATE:

  • Directions to Lee Hall (2530 Sullivan Drive, Raleigh, NC 27607) can be found on the NC State Campus Map interactive website.
  • Visit the University Transportation website for road construction updates/closings.
  • Please do not try to enter campus via Dan Allen Drive from Hillsborough Street. The road is gated and not accessible to campus from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

What to Bring

Please bring the following items to Orientation: 

  • Orientation Parking Permit
  • Valid driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID (to have your Wolfpack One Card campus ID card made)
  • Copies of your AP/IB/SAT II scores if available
  • Make sure you know your Unity ID and password and have answered your three security questions
  • Comfortable clothes/sneakers-you will be doing A LOT OF WALKING!
  • Alarm clock
  • Cell phone charger
  • Pen and paper
  • Pillow
  • Sleeping bag or long twin sheets & blanket
  • Towel, washcloth, toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.), and shower shoes
  • Sweater or light jacket as some buildings can be chilly
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Umbrella

First-Year Family Orientation

Parents and family members of first-year students in the Summer Start program are invited to attend First-Year Family Orientation on Thursday, June 22 – Friday, June 23. Attendance is highly encouraged, but not required.

Who Should Attend?

Family Orientation is designed for those who will serve as a student’s primary support throughout their transition to the university. During the program, attendees will:

  • Get better acquainted with the academic programs and campus services offered to your student
  • Gain insights into the potential adjustments your new college student and your family will face
  • Meet NC State staff, current students, and other Family Orientation attendees.

Can children or young adults attend the program?

Children and young adults are welcome to attend Family Orientation, but the majority of the sessions are presented in a lecture format and may not be engaging for them.

Will students and guests be together during the program?

Guests should not expect to be with their student throughout the entire program. Some sessions of New Student and Family Orientation will overlap, but the majority of presentations and activities are separate. Click here to see a sample schedule.

Cost

The cost of attendance is included in the mandatory First-Year Student Fee charged to all new first-year students.

Registration

Please wait until your student has been registered for Summer Start Orientation to register for Family Orientation. Once they have received an email confirming their registration, your student can complete the following steps:

  1. The student should log into their WolfPAW account via the Undergraduate Admissions website
  2. Click on the “Register for Orientation” link under the “My To-Do List” section on the Dashboard.
  3. On the next page, it should show that the student is registered for the Summer Start session on Thursday, June 22 – Friday, June 23, 2017.
  4. Scroll down to enter the family member information. Be sure to include a correct email address for your family members as this is the method of our correspondence with them.
  5. Click “Submit”
  6. A confirmation email will be sent to the family member’s email addresses. Please keep a copy of this email for your records.

Cancellation: If your plans have changed and you no longer plan to participate in Summer Start, please immediately notify New Student Programs at 919.515.1234 or summerstart@ncsu.edu to cancel your participation and reschedule your orientation session.

Additional meals for family members are available for purchase throughout Orientation at respective dining locations. All student meals (lunch and dinner on the first day and breakfast on the second day) are included in the New Student Orientation fee .

Housing and Hotels

You have several options to consider when making overnight accommodations for Family Orientation.  Housing is NOT included in the First-Year Student fee. You may pay to stay on campus in Avent Ferry Complex, or make an off campus reservation at a local hotel.

Due to the one-day nature of the Transfer Orientation program, housing for students will not be provided by New Student Programs.

  • Students requiring housing the night before their designated Orientation date may register for early arrival housing through University Housing Conference Services for an additional fee. Click here to register.
  • Students and families attending Transfer Orientation can reserve housing in Wolf Ridge Apartments.
  • Each apartment contains 4 bedrooms (each with a full-size bed) and 2 bathrooms. The rate is $45 per bedroom, per night. Guests may be assigned to share an apartment with another family attending the same event.  Please indicate on your registration form how many guests are in your party and how many bedrooms your party requires.
  • You must be registered to attend Transfer Orientation to stay on campus.  Space is limited, and early reservations are encouraged.
  • Reservations must be made five business days in advance on the Conference Services website, and pre-payment is required.
