Our Mission

Mission

To prepare new students to succeed academically, professionally and personally through a smooth transition to NC State University. Through an interactive and engaging summer academic experience, Summer START provides an opportunity for new students to develop the skills and behaviors needed to be successful in the university setting and thrive in an intimate and supportive community of their peers.

History

Summer START was developed in 2010 and served roughly 50 students. Over the past 6 years, it has more than quadrupled in size serving students across all academic disciplines. We are proud to support all newly admitted NC State students in helping them with the transition to NC State’s campus and college.

Objectives

To simulate the realities of a full academic semester within a 5-week summer experience as to minimize transitional concerns and promote the development of successful curricular and co-curricular habits.

To provide a supportive environment where each student can be recognized as a unique and capable learner, confident in their own potential for academic and personal success at the college level.

To promote awareness and access of university resources and support services that will foster the continued holistic development of the student throughout their undergraduate career.

To provide realistic academic and personal challenges that stimulate intellectual and interpersonal growth, including the acceptance of responsibility for one’s own decisions, behaviors, and successes.

To support the needs of under-resourced and underprepared students through intentional and diverse programming that improves the student’s ability to navigate the university landscape.

Location

The Summer START office resides in the Park Shops building on north campus.
