1887 Fellows- Spring Connect Cohort

1887 Fellows Roast Marshmallows on Spring retreat

The 1887 Fellows program is a semester-long cohort experience that helps to make NC State feel a little bit more like home. First-year students are invited to apply throughout January, with selection occurring after the first week of classes. Immediately after selection, new Fellows become part of the 1887 community and are launched into the expectations and opportunities that await:

Program Components:

1887 Fellows Retreat
At the Fellows Retreat, Fellows will get a chance to meet the cohort and their coaches, as well as create goals to kickoff a successful semester.
The retreat will be a half day virtual event held in on Saturday, January 30, 2021.

Weekly 1887 Socials|
During weekly socials, Fellows develop bonds with the cohort, hear from student leaders, and enjoy a social and study space exclusively available to members of the program.
Weekly socials will be held virtually on Mondays from 7:30 PM – 8:15 PM beginning on February 1, 2021

Success Coaching
Each Fellows work with a professional staff member who will help them develop and meet their goals. Fellows will virtually meet with their Coach 3 times during the semester based on the Fellow and Coach’s schedules.

Explore the Campus Community
By participating in the Fellows program, each Fellow will attend 3 campus events to immerse themselves in the campus community and involvement opportunities. All Fellows will be required to complete a brief reflection of their experiences.

What do I get from participating?

At the end of the semester, and as a result of completing the program requirements, students will receive a $200.00 gift card to the NC State Bookstores to assist in the purchase of textbooks for the following semester.

Please note regarding financial aid

For students receiving financial aid from NC State University, these awards will count as a resource and may impact financial aid awards distributed by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Impacts in financial aid will vary by student, so if students have concerns regarding impacts, they should contact their Financial Aid Counselor in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Students can find out who their Financial Aid Counselor is by clicking here and can email their counselor or call the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid at 919.515.NCSU.

Applications extended to Thursday, January 28 at 11:59PM

Who can apply?

Any first-year student beginning their career at NC State in Spring 2021 is eligible to participate. However, students already part of a Scholars or Honors program or living in a Living Learning Village should consider the commitment of participating in both experiences before applying.

How many Fellows are there?

Each semester there are between 20-30 Fellows in the cohort, depending on capacity.

How much of a time commitment is this?

Participants will dedicate time to the program through weekly 1 hour socials, three 1-hour coaching sessions, a retreat, and 3 campus events.

What is this retreat like? Are we camping?

Due to COVID-19, the retreat will be a half-day, virtual experience that will provide you an opportunity to connect with the cohort and build your semester goals.

When are the coaching sessions? How long do they last?

Coaching sessions will occur every 3-4 weeks each semester. Each session will last between 30-60 minutes long and will be scheduled between you and your coach.

Do I need to attend everything? What do I get at the end?

You can miss up to 2 socials throughout the semester but must meet with your success coach all 3 times in order to meet program requirements. In order to receive the $150 gift card to the NC State Bookstore at the end of the semester, Fellows must complete all program requirements.

With concerns about COVID-19, will events occur in person or virtually

To ensure everyone’s safety, the program will remain a virtual experience for the Spring 2021 semester.
